Sarovaram Biopark: The Oxygen of Kozhikode

Every city has a green pasture which acts as the lungs for the people & Kozhikode has one such place called the Sarovaram Bio Park which is more than a garden but a biosphere which has a habitat of its own. The Biopark is one among the 27 identified wetlands of India & the only one of Kerala.

The park was opened to the public in 2008 & has since been a haven for birdwatchers, naturists, children, young couples, old and public at large to spend healthy moments here. The construction of the park was made in traditional Kerala architecture which is evident with the massive entry gate which has red bricks & laden with terracotta tiles. The park also is designed in such a manner that it is along the canoly canal which is the heartline of the city. The eco-friendly theme is used to promote responsible tourism among the tourists. The mangroves within the 200 acres of wetlands are a place for migratory birds to come & create a habitat. It is also a budding place for some of the most intriguing flora & insects. The butterfly park inside is a great addition which adds more colours to the landscape.

Before the Biopark was constituted the place was earmarked by the state & corporation to build a wasteland to cater to the garbage menace in the city. This plan was at its onset faced with opposition from activists & environmentalists who agitated against converting such a delicate bio system into a garbage dump. The government finally had to give in & the work for the Biopark was initiated. Today the park is open from morning & joggers frequent this place to breathe in the air. The park also has benches & sidewalks which allow the public to rest. The indigenous trees & plants are marked for all to know & learn about the diverse flora. The park also provides boating facilities & the essence of the visit to this park is to be in the lap of nature.
